Word of the Day · Rest & Renewal

August 24, 2026 · back to today's word

Matthew 11:28

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus extends one of the most compassionate invitations ever spoken: He calls all who are weary and heavily burdened to come to Him, promising that He will give them rest. This declaration reveals something profound about the heart of God—He is not indifferent to our exhaustion or the weight we carry. Jesus understands that life in a fallen world leaves us drained, anxious, and spiritually depleted. His promise of rest is not merely physical relaxation, but a deep renewal that touches our souls. The Greek word for rest here suggests a complete refreshing, a restoration of what has been lost through striving and struggle. Jesus invites us to exchange our self-imposed burdens and anxieties for His easy yoke and light burden. This means trusting Him with our worries, allowing Him to carry what we were never meant to bear alone. True renewal comes when we stop trying to control everything and instead surrender our lives to His loving care. The Charismatic renewal emphasizes this intimate relationship with Christ—resting in His presence through prayer, worship, and yielding to the Holy Spirit. When we make time to simply be with Jesus, not doing but being, we discover that He restores our strength, renews our vision, and replenishes our joy. This rest is both a gift and a discipline, requiring us to intentionally withdraw from the noise and enter His peace.
